KING OF BHUTAN
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is the current reigning monarch of Bhutan. He was born on February 21, 1980, and ascended to the throne on December 9, 2006, after his father, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, abdicated in his favor. King Jigme Khesar is the fifth king of the Wangchuck dynasty, which has ruled Bhutan since 1907. During his reign, King Jigme Khesar has worked to modernize Bhutan while also emphasizing the importance of preserving its unique culture and traditions. He is known for his humility, accessibility to the people, and his efforts to promote Gross National Happiness (GNH) as an alternative measure of progress, focusing on the well-being and happiness of Bhutanese citizens rather than solely on economic indicators. King Jigme Khesar is married to Queen Jetsun Pema, and they have two sons, the Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck and Prince Ugyen Wangchuck.
